Fulbright stipendium for graduate study or research in the US for academic year 2027/28

The Fulbright Program is one of the most prestigious international exchange programs in the world today with the main objective to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other nations through the sharing of ideas, knowledge, skills, and individual experiences.

Grants are available for Swedish citizens aiming to pursue master’s or doctoral degree programs or non-degree doctoral-level research at universities in the United States in the 2027-28 academic year. Grantees receive a cash award from the Fulbright Commission (approximately 100 000 SEK for degree-seeking students and SEK 50 000 for non-degree researchers) to support the first year of their program in the United States. In cooperation
with the Institute of International Education (IIE), the Fulbright Commission will assist grantees with applying for admission and for supplementary financial assistance at a selection of their preferred U.S. universities. Fees associated with standardized testing, university applications, and the visa application are also covered by the Fulbright Commission. Please see our website for additional grant details and benefits.

Eligibility:
• Excellent academic record
• Swedish citizenship (dual U.S. and Swedish citizens may NOT apply)
• Swedish, EU or UK bachelor’s degree completed by summer 2026
• Proficiency in English

Applications will be accepted in all fields, EXCEPT dentistry, veterinary medicine or general medicine. Applications in public health or medical research are accepted. Students who are already enrolled in a graduate program at a university in the U.S. are not eligible. Preference will be given to candidates who have not recently studied for an extensive period (i.e. more
than 9 months) at a university in the United States within the past 3-5 years.
Please note that selected grantees will be issued a J-1 visa which requires them to return to their home country for a period of two years following their total grant period in the U.S.

How to apply:
The application deadline is April 27, 2026 for grants beginning in fall 2027. The online application is available from early January of each year.
