FAQ
General information about JU’s centrally managed Mac platform
To protect Jönköping University's information and IT environment, several centrally managed security solutions are used. These help to keep systems updated, encrypted and protected against malware - with minimal impact on user workflow.
Centralized management of updates
Since spring 2024, Intune DDM Software Update is used to centrally manage macOS updates.
- Notifications & timeframes
When Apple releases a new update, you will receive a notification. You'll be prompted to install the update within a specific timeframe.
- Automatic installations
If you delay the installation too long, it will start automatically.

Centralized management of FileVault keys
To protect the information on Mac computers, FileVault encryption is used. Encryption keys are stored centrally via Intune, which means:
- If you forget your local password, you can retrieve the recovery key in Company Portal from your cell phone, for example.
- The keys are encrypted and access-protected - only authorized support staff and you can use them.
- Encryption is automatically enabled on all new Macs and on existing ones that meet the requirements.

Microsoft Defender for Mac
All new Macs delivered by JU have Microsoft Defender for Endpoint pre-installed and activated.
- Provides real-time protection against malware and phishing.
- Automatically reports detected threats to IT.
- Works in the background without disturbing the user.

Supported macOS versions
2025-11-01: Support ends for macOS 13
JU's support for an operating system ends when Apple no longer provides security updates for it. This usually happens when a new version of macOS is released. When that happens, Apple stops updating the third oldest macOS version.
Example:
When macOS 26 is released, it means we continue to support macOS 26, 15, and 14, while support for macOS 13 ends.
