Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)

Upon completion of the course the student should have the:

Knowledge and understanding

  • to identify and discuss cultural aspects related to health and welfare
  • to identify and analyse the impact of common diseases/disabilities in diverse cultural contexts from different professional perspectives
  • to describe the impact and complexity of social determinants of health in different countries
  • to describe socio-economic factors and their influence on health
  • to discuss different perspectives on health and welfare in community development.

Skills and abilities

  • to consider contextual factors and appropriate research methods when working in diverse contexts
  • to explore local resources and strategies for promoting health care and welfare in diverse contexts
  • to collaborate with different partners within health care and welfare systems.

Judgement and approach

  • to identify and value their own professional culture
  • to understand the different cultural factors of health care interventions
  • to develop a culture sensitive approach in health/social care and incorporate cultural competence.

Contents

- assessing, identifying and critically reviewing published reports
- welfare factors, determinants and consequences of disability/disease
- diverse health and social perspectives and interventions
- strategies for promoting health in diverse contexts and facilitate community development
- social determinants of health and the relevance for different professions’ perspective
- cultural competence and cultural sensitive health and welfare approaches

Type of instruction

The course is conducted in the form of individual studies, lectures, group work and seminars.

The teaching is conducted in English.

Prerequisites

The requirement for entry into this course are passing grades of 30 credits in any educational area.

Examination and grades

The course is graded A, B, C, D, E, FX or F.

The examination will be based on an individual written literature review which will also be reported verbally and an individual written reflection.

A university lecturer serves as the course examiner.
