Bachelor and Master students
This information is for students admitted to a bachelor or master programme
Please remember that you cannot apply for a residence permit unless you have been admitted to full time accredited university studies in Sweden and paid the tuition fee. The application fee for a residence permit can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency’s website External link, opens in new window..
You will need the following documents when you apply for a residence permit:
- Your Letter of Acceptance for the bachelor or master programme (you will not receive a new letter after payment of tuition fee)
- Proof of emergency insurance (your Letter of Acceptance) See the information at ju.se/insurance
Opens in new window.
- Proof of extra health insurance, optional (for non-emergency events and pre-existing conditions, especially if admitted to a one-year programme)
- A passport valid for the duration of the studies in Sweden or the duration of the residence permit dates.
- A bank statement in your name in English with the currency clearly stated, showing that you have enough funds to support yourself for the duration of the permit period you apply for. The bank statement should not be dated earlier than 1 April for studies starting in August.
Optional:
- Your paid invoice to prove you have paid the tuition fee (download from the invoice system).
Please note that you should submit your application for residence permit no earlier than 4 months before the date you set as the permit start date. You can apply for a permit that starts 1 August even if the studies start a few weeks later. In that case, you can apply for a residence permit on 1 April at the earliest (if you have paid the tuition fee).
If admitted to a 2-year master or 3-year bachelor, you should apply for a study permit for at least 13 months (as long as your passport is valid the whole time).
The current maintenance requirement can be found on the Swedish Migration Agency’s website External link, opens in new window., under "What does the requirement to be able to support yourself financially mean?".
If you plan on bringing your family with you, please see the information for Coming with family at www.ju.se/en/study-at-ju/after-admission Opens in new window..
Permit dates for one-year programme
You should apply for a residence permit starting the date of the one-year programme and the end date should be when the academic year ends (date in the Letter of Acceptance). This means that you can apply for a residence permit for study on 1 April at the earliest (if you have paid the tuition fee for the degree programme).
You must be able to show you have funds for your living expenses for all months of the permit you apply for.
Permit dates for two-year programme
If you are admitted to a 2-year master programme, you can apply for a study permit from 1 August 2024 to the end date for the programme as it is written in your Letter of Acceptance.
A two-year programme at Jönköping University is two academic years long, which is about 9-10 months. Therefore, a study permit for a two-year master programme will be about 21-22 months.
Permit dates for three-year programme
If you are admitted to a 3-year bachelor programme and plan on going on an exchange semester (study abroad) in your third year, you should start by applying for a 13-month study permit and a 2-year permit for the final two years, so that there will not be any problems with any exchange studies.
Two-year permit option
As of 15 April 2024, there is an agreement between Jönköping University and the Swedish Migration Agency where our students can be approved for a two-year study permit. However, the end date of the permit cannot be more than 2 weeks after the offical end of the academic year.
There are requirements to be granted a 2-year permit.
You must:
- be admitted to a 2-year master or 3-year bachelor programme
- have a valid passport for the duration of the 2-year permit
- have sufficient funds for living expenses for those two years.
There are also requirements to keep your study permit.
- registered for full-time studies each semester and
- complete sufficient number of credits each year with a study permit (according to the Migration Agency's requirements
External link, opens in new window.)
The 2-year permit is is an option, not a requirement. You can still choose to apply for a study permit for at least 13 months if admitted to a 2-year master or 3-year bachelor programme.
