Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)

On successful completion of the College Readiness course, students will:

Knowledge and understanding

1. Have theoretical knowledge about specific study skills, college readiness, and learning strategies.
2. Understand which language skills and soft skills are needed as a student.
3. Have an understanding of the writing process and different kinds of writing structures.
4. Have an understanding of how cultural aspects may affect learning.
5. Have gained basic theoretical knowledge about how to manage information, reference primary and secondary sources as well as evaluate their reliability.
6. Understand how sustainable development, global issues and the global development goals affect education.

Skills and abilities

7. Be able to employ a range of reading strategies for different types of texts.
8. Be able to employ a range of strategies for oral presentations.
9. Be able to produce a short academic essay as a result of a writing and research process, including peer review.
10. Be able to perform an oral presentation with visuals in a group work.
11. Feel confident in handling intercultural communication in group work and informal meetings.
12. Be able to reflect on one’s own learning in a self-reflective journal.
13. Have a repertoire of strategies for communication in academic English.
14. Be able to find motivation for learning and build on their own creativity to adapt to different styles of teaching and modes of instruction.

Judgement and approach

The Intended Learning Outcomes concerning judgement and approach permeate and underscore the teaching methodology of the entire course and are not specific to any sub-course or exam.

Contents

The purpose of the course is to assist the transition into university level studies or other types of advanced training, by increasing student study skills and college readiness.
The horizontal aim is to develop and strengthen student skills within higher education through group work, social engagement, peer learning, reflective learning and autonomous learning whilst developing intercultural communication skills, metacognitive skills, information literacy and critical thinking.

Type of instruction

The modes of instruction used in the course are lectures, workshops, tutorials and mentoring sessions, as well as seminars, group discussions, study visits and similar types of instruction.

Active participation is required in seminars and other forms of examination. Group work is compulsory in order to meet the requirements of the course. The final grade of the course is issued only when all course units have been passed.

The teaching is normally conducted in Swedish, but can occasionally be in English.

The examination consists of written and oral assignments. Active participation throughout the course is required.

Qualification Requirements
To complete the course, the student must complete all course requirements, in total 7,5 credits. Active participation in seminars, group discussions and mentoring sessions is compulsory in order to meet the requirements of the course.

Course literature

All reference books and workbooks are provided on an individual and whole class basis. Bespoke teaching materials, and other compulsory reading materials will be distributed by the class teacher or lecturer.
