After a successful course, the student shall

- demonstrate comprehension of potential misunderstandings based on cultural values and traditions in the world's most significant cultures

- demonstrate the ability to apply the studied cultural competence in a professional and intercultural context
- demonstrate the ability to come up with ideas and solve problems that are relevant in intercultural contexts at home and abroad
- demonstrate the ability to communicate, collaborate and make decisions in multicultural groups

- demonstrate the ability to propose appropriate measures when required on the basis of a scientific and practical sound analysis of cultural differences.

Contents

The course deals with knowledge and insights about the impact of cultural differences on industrial activities and how national cultures differ and influence corporate strategies and people's communication and behaviors.

The course includes the following elements:
- Definitions of culture, subculture and organizational culture
- The leadership's dependence on cultural knowledge
- Global cultural patterns and social values through which they differ
- Models for cultural adaptation and stress caused by this
- Ethnocentrism and the importance of cultural identity
- The importance of stereotypical descriptions and roles
- Cultural intelligence
- To work with intercultural groups

Type of instruction

Lectures, exercises and seminars.

The teaching is conducted in English.

Prerequisites

Passed courses comprising at least 150 credits in the program or a Bachelor's degree in Engineering comprising 180 credits (or the equivalent).

Examination and grades

The course is graded 5,4,3 or Fail.

The final grade of the course consists of a weighting of the results of the examination parts and is only issued when all parts have been passed.
