Outgoing Exchange Student
If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU with a Swedish residence permit (for study or other reasons) and you are planning to go on an exchange semester outside of Sweden, there are a few things you should be aware of.
There are different things to remember depending on the type of residence permit you have.
You must contact the authorities of the country of your exchange to find out what is required for a stay in that country (including other EU countries).
Study permit
Permit expires before the start of the exchange period
If you have submitted an extension application and then you leave Sweden before a decision is made, you will have trouble returning to Sweden for the next semester back at JU.
If you really want to go on an exchange semester, you will need to withdraw your extension application from the Swedish Migration Agency and then submit a new application for study permit about 4 months before the start of the next semester at JU.
Permit expires during the exchange period
Do not apply for an extension. Instead you should apply for a new study permit for Sweden about 4 months before the start of the next semester back at JU.
You have a two-year study permit that covers the study abroad semester
You can keep your study permit while doing the study abroad semester, but you must be registered for the full-time exchange semester. See the information under "If you are granted a study permit External link, opens in new window." and under "If the study programme includes studies abroad".
Residence permit for other reasons
Travelling from Sweden with a temporary residence permit
With a temporary residence permit, you may travel in and out of the country during the time your permit is valid, but you must have a valid passport to leave Sweden, and your residence permit card to return.
See the information about travelling from Sweden with a residence permit. External link, opens in new window.
Travelling from Sweden with a permanent residence permit
You may travel in and out of the country when you have a permanent residence permit, but you must have a valid passport to leave Sweden, and your residence permit card to return.
If you have a permanent residence permit, you may be away from Sweden for up to one year and keep your residence permit.
See the information about travelling from Sweden with a residence permit. External link, opens in new window.
Permit expires before the start of, or during, the exchange period
If you leave Sweden before a new decision is made, it can be difficult to return to Sweden before a decision is made.
You should consider not going on an exchange semester.
