Students depict design history at furniture fair

Classic eras in design history was the theme of the furniture that students at the School of Engineering (JTH) at Jönköping University (JU) have made and exhibited at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, 4-8 February.

“We received so much positive feedback during the fair,” says the JTH student Annie Reinard.

28 students in their second year of the JTH Product Development with Furniture Design programme organized the exhibition at the fair, which brings together the entire furniture industry. They have taken inspiration from 20th century European design such as French modernism and Swedish Grace when they have produced their furniture in groups, consisting of armchairs, shelves, a bench and a table.

Thought it was a business

“Many people thought we were a company exhibiting and have been surprised that we were students. Many have found our theme interesting because there are so many different types of furniture and materials,“ says Annie Reinard.

The programme manager Victor Strand says that they wanted to show something multifaceted at the fair and that it always is interesting to look back in design history.

"Looks like it came straight from the store"

“The furniture turned out really well and I am so proud of our students! All groups have really captured their theme and the furniture looks like it came straight from the shop,” says Victor Strand.

The students have also built their 14-metre-long and rather technically advanced exhibition stand on their own, which Victor Strand thinks shows both excellence and breadth.
