Great interest in spring programmes at Jönköping University

There is great interest in studying at Jönköping University (JU) the coming spring semester. The number of first-hand applicants to study programmes has increased by 42 %. Last year 594 people applied for these programmes, while this year's figure is 846.

On 15 October, the regular admission round for spring semester programmes at Sweden's universities closed. The Nursing programme at JU has had a strong increase of 41 %, which shows a continued high interest in the nursing profession. The Social Work (socionom) programme remains the most popular programme, with a 26 % increase in first-hand applicants.

A novelty for the spring semester 2025 is that complementary pedagogical education (kompletterande pedagogiska utbildningen, KPU) is now offered remotely. This has attracted a lot of interest, with a total of 70 first-hand applicants. Sweden has a major shortage of qualified teachers, and the new distance option makes the programme more accessible regardless of where you live or where you are in life.

“Distance teachincg is long-awaited. Many people around the country are thinking about changing careers and becoming teachers, but moving to study has been too big a step. However, there are two physical meetings per semester, otherwise you can sit wherever you want to complete the programme,” says Weronica Ader, Programme Manager of Teacher Education Programme for Secondary School and KPU.

Growing interest in engineering programmes

The Basic Science Semester, which gives access to engineering programmes, continues to attract many people. The number of applicants has increased by 20 % to the total of eight different entrances, including the new focus on the Master Programme in Civil Engineering. JU is the third most applied for university when it comes to engineering Bachelor's programmes and this year's application figure is the best in five years. The need for engineers is great, which makes it gratifying to see the increasing interest in engineering programmes.

“It is incredibly gratifying to see the great interest in our programmes, especially in areas that are crucial for the future needs of society,” says Robert Gunnarsson, Vice President for Education at JU.

As in previous years, many choose to apply for free-standing courses for the spring semester. In total, JU has received 1,199 first-choice applications, which corresponds to a decrease of 7 % from last year's application figures. The most popular courses for spring 2025 are Special Education Basic Course, Leading Change: Accelerating AI Adoption, and Physical Education as well as Health grades 7-9.

Jönköping University also offers higher vocational education in several areas in collaboration with municipalities and industry organizations. Within the YH programmes, there is close cooperation with companies and organizations to provide working life with the skills they need. The most popular YH programmes this year are Construction Production Manager in Jönköping and in Malmö.

In summary, JU thus sees a very positive development in applications for the spring semester 2025, with a broad interest in both traditional and new educational areas.
