Orange Week at Jönköping University
On 18-24 November, Orange Week takes place in Jönköping County. During week 47, several different activities are carried out with the aim of spreading knowledge about domestic violence and men's violence against women. Jönköping University (JU) contributes by inviting the public to the University Library, where researchers from the network “Tema våld” at the School of Health and Welfare will discuss the topic.
In previous years, Orange Week has been recognised by the University Library, where a literature exhibition has highlighted the topic. This year's exhibition will be the same, but what is new is the collaboration between researchers at the School of Health and Welfare and library staff. To increase engagement, a physical meeting with an open discussion with researchers will be organised in the library at 16:00-17:00 on 19 November.
Ylva Albertsson is a team leader at the University Library and has been one of several people involved in planning the new concept. She sees the research at the School of Health and Welfare as a great asset in the form of expertise in the field and the library as a good meeting place for disseminating knowledge to the public and JU's students.
“Domestic violence is a major social problem and an issue that is important to talk about and spread knowledge about. We wanted to draw more attention to the week and the topic this year and thought it was natural to turn to the School of Health and Welfare and their research,” says Ylva.
‘We want to communicate that there is support and help available’
The network Tema våld is part of the School of Health and Welfare's research environment (Studies on Integrated Health and Welfare (SIHW) and consists of people from JU and partners. The participants share an interest in developing knowledge about men's violence against women and violence in close relationships, its expression and its consequences for people, as well as the actors that exist to prevent and combat violence.
Mikael Skillmark is a social worker and lecturer in social work at the School of Health and Welfare and contact person for the Tema våld. He sees the event as a good way to spread knowledge about the topic and believes that an open dialogue between researchers and the public can clarify the current state of research and the challenges facing society.
“Among other things, we will talk about which organisations and activities are working to combat violence in society, how they work and what role research can play in these activities. We hope to learn more about men's violence against women and domestic violence. And not least that everyone has the right to a life free from violence,’ says Mikael.
