This August, Jönköping University (JU) proudly welcomed nearly 4,000 new students to campus - including more than 1,200 internationals from over 100 countries. Whether pursuing a full degree or joining for a semester through exchange, they bring fresh perspectives that enrich classroom discussions, group work, and campus life.
“Campus always comes alive in August,” says Eric Freid, Team Leader for International Recruitment. “When thousands of students arrive – many from abroad – it creates a real buzz. You see packed buildings, full cafés, and students navigating their first days on campus with excitement and curiosity.”
Welcoming so many international students is a university-wide effort, involving everything from admissions and accommodation to arrival coordination and orientation sessions.
“We communicate with admitted students through multiple channels and offer opportunities to connect even before they arrive. It’s a whole-campus commitment to ensure students feel prepared, supported, and excited to begin their journey at JU,” Eric Freid adds.
A hidden gem for students worldwide

International students contribute cultural insights and new perspectives that strengthen the learning environment for everyone.
For Lara Nur Mede, a first-year student from Turkey studying Prosthetics and Orthotics, the decision to come to JU has already been rewarding. She highlights the safe environment, the international community, and the engaging, hands-on teaching that helps her prepare for the future:
“JU is a hidden gem! I feel welcome, make friends from all over the world, and gain an education that prepares me for the next step in life. I would recommend it to everybody.”
An international network that opens doors
JU’s network of more than 330 partner universities is a cornerstone of its international strategy. This year, nearly a third of the new international arrivals are exchange students spending a semester or full academic year in Jönköping.
Charlotte Clancy, an exchange student from Sydney, Australia, says JU stood out as a welcoming place:
“JU is a very community-centered university with lots of student life going on. Everyone is so friendly and always willing to help. Coming from a big city, the difference is huge - you really feel welcome.”
Her experience is echoed by Andrej Ilencik from Prague, Czech Republic, who recently began his exchange semester:
“The Kickoff was a big and pleasant surprise! It was my first time this far from home, and the fact that I was accepted and could make new friends made everything so much easier,” he says.
