JU consolidates its position in prestigious world ranking
For the second year in a row, Jönköping University (JU) is included in Times Higher Education World Universities Ranking. This year's ranking includes 1,904 universities in more than a hundred countries. Among the Swedish universities, JU ends up in shared eleventh place, which is an improvement of one place compared to the previous year.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE ranking) started in 2004 and is considered one of the three most important and prestigious international university rankings. Universities round the world are evaluated based on five different criteria: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry. The three first-mentioned areas have the greatest weight, and account for around 30 per cent each.
In the ranking, JU ends up in the same range as last year, 601–800, even though there are more than 100 new universities this year. JU's strongest areas are research quality and international outlook, where the university ranks in the top 400 in the world and top ten in Sweden.
“I am happy that Jönköping University continues to have a strong position in the THE ranking, which is considered as one of the best in the world. It is particularly gratifying that this year we have improved our national ranking. This year's ranking especially shows that our research quality is at a high level, not only in comparison with Swedish universities, but also internationally,” says Agneta Marell, president at JU.
Among international universities in the same ranking range as JU are e.g University of Arkansas (USA), University of Córdoba (Spain), Coventry University (UK), University of Haifa (Israel), Kobe University (Japan), University of Lille (France) and University of Warsaw (Poland).
Last year, 1,799 universities were included in the ranking, and this year, 1,904 universities are included.
In total, there are approximately 25,000 universities in the world.
