A beach at Sciacca in Sicily.
"My big task is to get a couple of kilos of sun-dried tomatoes"
This summer, Jönköping University (JU) brings you some summer inspiration! Each week, staff members from various parts of JU will share their top summer tips – everything from hidden gems and day trip destinations to personal favourites for relaxation and vacation feeling. First up is Henrik Linderoth, Professor ICT-BIM in building at the School of Engineering, JU.

Tomatoes to be sun-dried.
What are your plans for the summer?
"I will start by going to Bangkok after Midsummer to visit some colleagues. Then it is straight to Sciacca in Sicily. My wife is from there and for the last 25 years we have spent four to five weeks in the summer there, so there has not been much Midsummer celebration for us... "La famiglia" has a simple house in the countryside where you can go out into the garden and pick some fruit and vegetables instead of going to the store. The only downside is that there is no air conditioning, but it only takes 10-15 minutes by car to the beach. My big task down there is to produce a couple of kilos of sun-dried tomatoes."
Do you have a favourite hidden gem in or around Jönköping?
"I live in Skövde and come from Varnhem. I usually say that I have three well-trodden paths between Jönköping travel center and JTH and what is outside them I do not have a good idea of. So the tips must go north. Varnhem's monastery church and Kata farm are given excursion destinations for those interested in history. After the latest excavations, the early medieval history of when Sweden was Christianized has been rewritten. The so-called Vallevägen is also worth seeing. Ideally, you should go there when the sweet berry trees are in bloom, but it is also beautiful in summer. Then you can also head towards Läckö Castle and take a boat trip in the Eken archipelago."

What is your top summer tip in general?
"Do not plan for a lot of things that need to be done. When we are in Sicily, it may not be a typical vacation. We go to the beach, do shorter day trips and sometimes longer trips of a few days. There is a lot to see in Sicily.
Another tip is to download a bunch of episodes from the podcast "Snedtänkt" with Kalle Lind. It is very entertaining if you are interested in 20th century history, including from an entertainment perspective. Start with the episode about Jonny Bode, the singer, composer and scandal artist, a completely unlikely figure."
