Jönköping University's Badge for Merit 2018 awarded to Tomas Bengtsson

The Badge for Merit is awarded to people who have made contributions of significant importance for Jönköping University.

Tomas Bengtsson is Director of International Student Recruitment at University Services and is awarded the Badge for Merit with the following motivation:

“Tomas Bengtsson has been a driving force in organising and building up the work of recruiting international students, an area where Jönköping University is among the most successful in Sweden and the Nordic region.

The introduction of tuition fees for international students from outside the EU/EEA in 2011 meant that all universities in Sweden have had to work in totally new ways and it has had a major impact on administrative support. Tomas was one of the driving forces in the transition at Jönköping University and before tuition fees were introduced a conscious internal effort for handling and procedures had already been made, with the result that the university was well prepared when fees were introduced.

International student recruitment has developed continuously and Tomas has been among the initiators of efforts that have been success factors for Jönköping University such as prioritised focus areas internationally, personnel and collaborating partners on site directly in selected markets, preparatory education and marketing methods.

Through his focus on relationship building Tomas has built up a substantial network and a close collaboration with key stakeholders for Jönköping University such as the Swedish Institute, the Swedish Migration Board, the Ministry of Education and Research, and international partners.

With his knowledge, ingenuity, and great personal commitment Tomas has been part of strengthening Jönköping University’s international profile.”

The prize was awarded for the first time in 2003 and Tomas Bengtsson is the 26th employee to receive the award. The Badge for Merit will be presented at the Academic Ceremony on 5 May.
