Meeting room occupancy detection with a low-resolution heat sensor

Infrared light (IR) sensors can be used to detect warm bodies in a space. In this project, images from an IR camera mounted inside a conference room were used to track occupant movement while also keeping count of occupants. Image processing allowed IR radiation to be distinguished from sources of noise such as the sun and radiators. Knowing the number of occupants and their movement patterns enables optimization of office space use and heating and ventilation. This may be useful in smart offices where typically, data is captured from the physical environment and used in intelligent analysis to improve well-being and productivity of occupants.
